The Leaves Are Coming

Spring 2021

There is just a hint of green in the trees and the leaves are starting to open. If we get a few more hot and sunny days I think the trees will transform in to green. I can't wait. It is yet another sign of spring and the warmer days ahead!

The prairie crocus (Anemone patens)

Saltcoats: May 2021

My mom and dad pride themselves with the collection of wild flowers that they have in the front yard. These are the first flowers to appear after the snow melts. The prairie crocus (Anemone patens).  As the sun came out they kept growing taller and taller and opening bigger and bigger. It was a treat to find them in the yard and enjoy their fleeting beauty. They are finished now and their flowers are done. I will have to wait till next spring to see them again....

Red-winged Blackbird

May 2021

This was the best I could do. As I tried to get closer for a better photo the blackbird took off. I guess to be a bird photographer you really need a bigger lens. If you look closely you can see the red and yellow wing band.  This male was calling: "conk-la-ree". It is a sound of spring. You know it is finally spring when you hear these blackbirds calling.

Covid Update

May 20 - update on Saskatchewan

We have 141 new covid cases in Saskatchewan but only 5 new cases in our zone.  So I guess we are lucky? It is hard to keep track of all the stats and numbers. It is also hard to know when to worry. How many cases are a concern? I try not to look at the numbers to often as I don't know if helps to know....

Dog Walk

 May 2021

Finally spring has arrived! It is May and the days are getting longer and the sun is getting warmer.....everything is starting to turn green. I have been trying to walk everyday. I am trying to find a new walking route so I can log 10km a day. I usually walk around the lake and that is only a 6km loop. So I have been trying to walk some countryside roads to find a new loop. I often take mom's dog out with me and he loves looking for gophers in the ditch or ducks in the soughs.

Migrating Snow Geese Stop on Anderson Lake

 April 2021

At the end of April we were lucky to have thousands of Snow Geese and Canada Geese stop on Anderson Lake for a few weeks. There were hugs flocks of birds. They would rest on the water for most of the day leaving at 6pm to go into the fields to feed. They were very noisy and I could hear them from inside the house. On my daily walk around the lake I stop to take some photos. They were very skittish and as soon I walked towards them they started to fly away. But you can see from this last photo the amount of birds in the air that were hundreds or thousands of birds. The white that you can see on the lake is also more birds that were sitting in the water.

A Splash of Colour

Old Grain Bins

I try to get out for a walk everyday. My goal is to walk close to 200km in the month of May. I have to get moving as I am only at about 28km at the moment. My usual route is to loop around Anderson Lake and it takes me past this old farm yard. I felt that these grain bins were worth a photo as their fading red colour stands out in the brown landscape of spring. The frogs are singing and as I step closer to the water to snap my photo the frogs stop. Then as I move away they start to sing again. Another wonderful sign of spring.

Spring Flowers

 May 2021

The Prairie Crocus are out and opening as the days get warmer. I found these ones over at the Leflay Trail wild flower garden. It is a wonderful sign of spring to find crocus.
