Arrival in Macau
I arrived to Macau after almost 24 hours of travel from Vancouver. I didn’t sleep much on the plane and it was 7am BC time when I arrived to my dorm room at the University. I was exhausted. However, I had to make up my bed before I could go to sleep. I was thankful for the blackout curtains and the air conditioning. I slept well. I was woken to someone knocking on my door. I opened the door and Evan was there sipping coffee. He had already been awake for hours. He was ready to go explore our new city. Ok, ok I said, just give me 5 minutes. I quickly brushed my teeth, pulled back my hair and threw on some clothes. I grabbed my camera and walked out into the heat. It is hot and humid here. The heat hits you in the face and makes me realize how cold I felt from the air con.
We wondered around a few streets and headed over to the City of Dreams as I remembered our teacher telling us that there was a coffee shop in the casino there. We entered into the grand lobby of the Hyatt. It was beautiful with a silver globe rising out of the gleaming floor. We wondered along the corridor of high end shops and finally found the entrance to the casino. It was 8am and there were people in the casino. Evan and I wondered if these people had been here all night or if they also were stuck with jet leg and couldn’t sleep so they came to the casino. We walked thought the casino and I thought it looked like any other casino that I have ever been in. There were flashing lights, tables, loud noises, smokers, dealers, security guards. We left the casino floor and found the coffee shop but it didn’t open till 10am.
Hummmm. We decided to look upstairs at the food court. We wondered back along the same corridor and expensive shops. It seemed spooky because nothing was open and there were no people around. Upstairs we found a coffee shop that was open! Hurray. I had a latté and a chocolate croissant. We looked out the window at the Venetian Casino and the water fountains. I mentioned that the view didn’t seem that different than looking at the Vegas strip.
We headed over to the International school (TIS) to have a look around. We were able to use the internet and send a few emails to let our families know that we were safe. We hid in the air conditioned school and visited with some of our new colleagues. They suggested that we should go to the food court at the Venetian Casino for lunch. We wondered back out into the heat towards the food court. The streets were much busier now. We cut through the City of Dreams and found the corridors jammed with people. All the shops were open and there were people filling all once empty spaces. We got lost in the Venetian Casino. A security guard gave us directions to the food court. We were in heaven. There was a massive food court with so many different options for lunch. I could pick Malaysian food, Japanese food, Chinese food, Thai food, pizza, burgers, smoothies or ice cream. I decided on Japanese food – pork cutlet over rice. Yum.
After lunch we wondered around the streets. We looked in electronic shops, food shops and 7/11. We found a nature reserve with a set of steep stairs to climb up to the top of a hill for a view of the city. We looked out at the ocean and the huge bridges that connect Macau to Mainland China. Mostly, we just sweated. It was hot. I bought a set of speakers for 47 MOP which equals about $6 Cdn. I also bought bag of coffee beans for the same price. I found a pair of plastic slippers for 28 MOP which is $3.50 Cdn. The slippers were guaranteed to be “ergonomico”, “comfortevolve”& “anti-microbico”. Perfect!
