Coffee

Date: June 17, 2018

This is heaven to me. Coffee on my rooftop. Relaxing, reading my book and looking out at the mountains. It’s a quiet Sunday morning and the city hasn’t woken up yet. A chance for me to relax and get ready to start my day.

It's officially summer holidays! I am so happy to have a break from school and a chance to rewind and relax.

June 12, 2018 - Hong Kong

Saturday, 25 April 2020

I live in Hong Kong. It is a crazy city that is busy and intense. Yet, it still has something to show me everyday. I love the nature and quick access to the trails. In one hour I can be far from the noise of traffic and people and surrounded by trees and birds. I can also go the other direction and be at the beach going for a quick swim in the South China Sea. I am about to head off for a few months of travel and adventure. Keep tuned for more stories and adventures.

Update!

Sunday, 22 April 2018

This is a slideshow of images. I will try to post more images. I can no longer post from my phone so it makes it a challenge to update my blog. I will use this Google slideshow as a work around so I can post photos from phone. Sorry for the lack of posts. I will try to be posting more now. However, you will have to look on this slideshow to see the posts.

Hong Kong Winter

Sunday, 22 April 2018

A collection of photos from January. I am glad winter is over now and the temperatures have warmed up. I am looking forward to summer.

Looking Back

Sunday, 22 April 2018

Just a collection of photos from the past few months. I was excited to bring home some stroopwafles from Belgium, since my plan had a stopover there.

Hong Kong: Happy Valley Horse Races

Sunday, 22 April 2018

Just before Easter break I went out with a group of friends to watch the horse races at Happy Valley. It was a fun night of joining in the excitement and hanging out at the race track. I didn't bet on any horses so I didn't have a chance to make any extra $$. But I still enjoyed the evening and excitement.

2018: Easter Holidays to Switzerland

Sunday, 22 April 2018

Just a few snapshots of my holiday to Switzerland! I had a great time and I was so excited to finally see the Alps! I guess I had seen them before in France but this time they were covered with snow so it seemed extra special. I can't wait to go back.

Hong Kong: Hiking to Amah Rock

Sunday, 22 April 2018

The Legend

Amah Rock (望夫石), located close to Tai Wai on the New Territories side of the Lion Rock Tunnel, is another of Hong Kong’s geological curiosities with a story.

15 meters in height and named for its distinctive shape, it is said that Amah Rock is the woman-turned-boulder figure of a faithful wife, whose fisherman husband left for overseas in search of work one day and was never seen again. Day after day she would climb the hill with her son on her back, awaiting her husband’s return, gazing out towards the ocean which, unbeknown to her, had already claimed him.

Taken pity on by the Goddess of the Sea – or perhaps in guilt that she had allowed it to happen – the wife was turned into stone in reward for her faithfulness, in order that she could be reunited with her husband and stand as a symbol of loyalty and love that happy Hong Kongers could forever visit at weekends.

Thank you to http://www.strippedpixel.com/amah-rock-lion-rock-country-park/ for this information about the hike and legend.

Hong Kong At Night

Friday, 15 December 2017

Here is a photo of the night view of Hong Kong. This is from a rooftop bar in Causeway Bay. I just love this view at night, looking out to the Victoria Harbour. We are looking over to Kowloon.

This Girl Loves Hiking

Friday, 15 December 2017

This is a photo of one of my favourite hiking trails! The Wilson Trail! I am out hiking with some friends on a Saturday afternoon. We went for a 12 km hike and we ended up getting rained on. Not just a little rain but rain for almost an hour. We were all totally soaked. My friend didn't have a rain proof bag and her phone got wet and stopped working.

Memories

Friday, 15 December 2017

This is one of my favourite views from Macau. The old stair case in Macau. I just love these huge, old trees. This photo makes me happy and brings back good memories.

The Victoria Peak

Friday, 15 December 2017

I usually go up "The Peak" for a hike on the weekends.

Hong Kong Sunsets

Friday, 15 December 2017

Sunsets over Hong Kong! This is why I love my apt. I pay way too much rent but I love my view. I can go up to the rooftop of my building and watch the sun go down. I do love this view. I am so happy that I moved to Hong Kong and I wish I would have made this move from Macau a long time ago. The city has so much to offer and I love the sea and mountain. It reminds me so much of Vancouver.

New Friends Are Old Friends

Friday, 15 December 2017

Meet Brady! I met him 2 years ago while on holidays in the Philippines. He is from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He works hard all summer and then spends his winter in the Philippines. I just got to see him in Hong Kong a few weeks ago. He was flying back to the Philippines and he made a stop over in Hong Kong so we met up for a visit! He is happy and excited to be back in the Philippines for the winter. So as I mentioned new friends become old friends. His sister lives in Yorkton and runs a furniture store there. So yet again I learn that the world is large yet small. We all are connected in some strange way.

December in Hong Kong

Friday, 15 December 2017

Hello Everyone!

I am sorry that you haven't been getting any updates from me. I blame Google. They have stopped updating their Blogger App so I can no longer post from my phone or ipad. It seems like a pain to have to log into the computer and post from here. I know that is a lame excuse but is the one I am going with.

I think blogging does run a course and over time you lose some of the excitement for blogging and updating content. But I want to try again to grab some of this excitement and update you all on my life!

So here we go!

Sleep

I have become interested in tracking my sleep. I am beginning to wonder if I might have a sleep apnea. I am now trying to sleep with my watch on so I can track my sleep. I am starting to see a pattern of very little deep sleep. I do question how accurate my watch is on tracking my sleep. But is still data and a chance to see if there are patterns. I will keep you updated with what I find.

Sai Ying Pun

Thursday, 3 August 2017

Here is a photo from my neighbourhood in Hong Kong. I am living on Hong Kong island. There are actually 261 islands in the surrounding area of Hong Kong. Some of these islands have cities on them and ferry service to the main island. Other islands are small and there is no one living on them. I am a far distance from my school so I will have about a 1 hour commute to work every day. But the good news is that I can take the subway so it will be fast and easy to get to work.

Here is how they describe the district that I live in:

"Close to Central, far enough from chaos, Sai Ying Pun is a great place to be. It still has a lot of the old school charm (dried fish markets for days and various local shops) and the Sun Yet Sen Park is one of the best in the area. Of course all the restaurants and bars in the area make it a gathering place for young people as well as those wanting to sample the variety of different cuisine."

Night Hike

Thursday, 3 August 2017

I went out exploring with a group of local people that like to hike at night. Due to the high temperatures during the day these hikers prefer to go out after the sun goes down. I joined them for an 8km hike in the New Territories of Kowloon. It was a great night to be out and hiking. The temperature was just right. There were also some rewarding views of the city when we got up high. We walked through a lot of spider webs with only 1 spider landing on someone's face. Aghh! I am so glad that I was not leading this hike. We went through monkey country but we didn't see or hear any monkeys. There is also suppose to be wild boar in this park but they are very shy and hard to spot in the dark. They usually keep away from hikers.

Sharp Peak

Thursday, 3 August 2017

At the start of July I had a chance to go on a hike in Sai Kung. I went up to the top of Sharp Peak. Basically it is that very sharp point. The weather was cloudy and at the summit of the peak the rain started. I ended up coming down in a large stream of water. At times the water was up to the top of my socks. I was totally soaked by the end of this hike.

Sharp Peak is 468m high and it is famous for 360 views looking over to Mainland China. Of course when I got to the top the clouds had rolled in and the rain started so there was no view. There was also no interest to stay at the top of that mountain. It was a 15km hike so a good day of walking even I did get rained on. Luckily by the end of the hike I was almost dry.

"The mountain bears an alternative name: Nam She Tsim (蚺蛇尖). Nam she, in Chinese, refers to pythons. Some people say the name arose as the place was home to a particularly large tropical snake, while others say it was meant as a reference to the winding and rugged mountain path."

Moving In

Thursday, 3 August 2017

Here are a few photos from my new apartment in Hong Kong. I have finally moved in and I am starting to feel settled. I made a trip to Ikea which is needed when you move into a new place. I am pleased with the views from my apt. I am able to see both the ocean and the mountains. I also have access to the rooftop so I can sit out side as well. I just need to get a table and chairs. I am excited to be in Hong Kong. It is a very dynamic city. There is an energy that is always buzzing. It feels very different from Macau. So far everyone I have met has been very friendly. So many people have gone out of their way to help me. Taxi drivers carry my suitcases and strangers hold doors for me. It is a nice feeling to meet so many kind people.

Laos

Thursday, 6 July 2017

In April I traveled to Luang Prabang, Laos. I had a chance to go on a workshop with a bunch of teachers from TIS. We had some free time in the evenings and I had a chance to visit the famous night market. This night market is so unique and special. It is one of the last original markets of Asia. So many of the markets in Thailand have now become so commercial. The goods are mostly from China. They are poor quality and no longer special. You can find the same trinkets in every market. However, here in LP the goods are still hand made by the ladies that are selling the goods in the market. The market still feels special and unique. You can find special items in the this market that you won't find anywhere else. You also feel a sense of helping others when you buy items at the market because you know that your money is going to the lady at the stall and this money will help her family.

Here is a short video of the sunset and the market slowly being set up. They close the main street in town and all the ladies set up tents and lights to showcase their goods.

Sunset over Lantau Mountain

Thursday, 6 July 2017

This is from a hike I took last February but I thought I would share this video as it was a beautiful sunset with the fog rolling in.

Summer Holidays

Tuesday, 4 July 2017

Can you tell that it is summer holidays? I suddenly have time on my hands. I am able to have a look at my blog. I haven't been updating this site in a long time and you all probably gave up on looking at it. I will try to update some photos as soon as I can. My big complaint is that Blogger no longer updates their app and it will not run on my phone so it can only write posts on my computer which is very inconvenient. Since I have some free time at the moment I will try to post more stories and photos for you all. Enjoy!

PS - This photo is from Luang Prabang. I was there in April for a short visit with my TIS teaching friends.

Hong Kong Bus Ride

Tuesday, 4 July 2017

Here is a short video of my bus ride. I was in Hong Kong and on my way to a hiking trail. It was a beautiful day with the sun and blue sky. It was a fun bus ride along the windy road.

Hiking Video

Tuesday, 4 July 2017

Here is a short hiking video from my hike the other day. I was hiking the Dragon's Back trail which is about a 5 km ridge walk on Hong Kong Island. It was a rainy day and there was a thunderstorm. I tried to capture the sounds of the thunder as it echoed off the water and mountains but I was unsuccessful.

Hong Kong Hike to Sunset Peak

Thursday, 9 March 2017

Another weekend, another hike. I am now hiking up the trail to Sunset Peak. This is quickly becoming my favourite hike in Lantau. I have a little treat to keep me moving - the famous Picnic bar. I have only ever seen these chocolate bars in Asia. They have a mix of nuts, chocolate and wafer - YUM. I dedicate this picnic to Evan as he introduced these bars to me when we arrive in Macau in 2012 for our teaching practicum. He is no longer in Asia so no more picnic bars for Evan...

Hong Kong Bound

Thursday, 9 March 2017

This is my view on the weekends when I line up to catch the ferry to Hong Kong. There is always a long line up as we wait for the ferry to board. The sun came out and it was hot. After standing in line for 20 minutes I had to take off my winter jacket as I started overheating. I tried to enjoy this moment of hot as when I board the ferry I will spend 1 hour freezing. I don't know why but they keep the A/C cranking on the boat. It is always so cold on the ferry. I always need to have an extra jacket to wrap around my legs for the journey to Hong Kong.

CNY: A Chance to Get Away

Thursday, 9 March 2017

At the start of February I was able to take off on a get away to Cebu, Philippines. It was nice break to escape winter in Macau and a chance to soak up the sun. I spent my time sitting on the lounge chairs reading my book and napping. It was a lovely holiday and a great chance to unwind from school.

Hiking HK: The best way to spend a day

Thursday, 9 March 2017

Here I am out on a hike in Hong Kong. I am on a trail that makes it way up to Sunset Peak in Lantau. It is a cool winter day but hiking still works up a sweat, as you can tell from my wet hair. The trail feels like it will go on for a long time in this shot.

2017: Year of the Rooster

Thursday, 9 March 2017

2017: Year of the Rooster

I haven't been blogging much lately. I think that is a natural progression with blogs. They come and go. At the moment my blog has been forgotten. The biggest challenge is that I use to be able to blog from my iphone which I found really easy. I could see something take a photo and then write about it. All in a matter of minutes. For some reason the phone app has stopped working so I can't blog from my phone any more. The blogging process now requires me to log into the computer and send a message. Some how this feels too much like work. I am working on the computer all day so I don't want to type more when I get home. I am going to try to add a few more updates to get everyone up to speed on my 2017.

Cricket

 Sunday, 30 October 2016

A strange and large cricket spotted on my hike today in Hong Kong. I was hoping he wouldn't jump on me when I took the photo. I stood back as far as possible for this shot.

Butterfly Art

Sunday, 30 October 2016

A fun art installation in Hong Kong at the PMQ. A wall of colour and butterflies.

Monkeys

Sunday, 30 October 2016

Monkeys on the trail. I was out hiking in Hong Kong this weekend. I was a little nervous about the monkeys as my backpack had my lunch inside and thought they might decide they want my sandwich. Luckily they ignored me and I passed by.
