Mid-Autumn Festival 2014

Monday, 8 September 2014

The Mid-Autumn Festival is around the time of the full moon in September. This year it is very early in the month and last Friday we had a big party at our school to celebrate this event. There were fun games such as soak the teacher and thrown bean bags into hoops. There were bank sales, popcorn and hot dogs. It was a fun way to mingle with the students and parents.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a popular lunar harvest celebration in the ancient Chinese society. The festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is in September or early October in the Western calendar. Nowadays, it is an occasion for families to reunite under the full moon – a symbol of happiness and prosperity.

To celebrate the festival, people have moon cakes and festive fruits, play lanterns and lantern riddles. Besides, moon rabbit is a traditional icon for the festival.

All around Macau are beautiful lanterns set up and hanging from every street lamp. I walked past this display on my way home from school. Last year the theme was space and there were little rockets and space men. I think the theme this year is butterflies and fruit. The display by my house has rabbits sitting on fruit. So I am not sure exactly what the message is. Perhaps it is last in translation.
