We drove towards Kandi and stopped at an elephant orphanage along the way. This was a great opportunity to see a wide range of elephants and get close to snap some photos. It was hot standing in the sun and we felt sorry for the elephants as many of them were chained up. We wondered about the conditions that these elephants were living in. Hard to know. We headed over to the resturant on the river. It was nice to escape the heat. We watched a stampede of 40 elephants come down to the river to bathe. That was exciting. We got some great photos.
We stopped along the way to photograph hundreds of large roosting Fruit Bats. Later right at dusk we watched in fascination as hundreds of these flying mammals silently flew over the city of Kandy, presumably in search of ripened fruit hanging from trees in the up disturbed areas of the mountains.
We arrived at our scenic guest house early enough to have an hour of golden twilight with the thrum of the city muted while several species of birds provided the audio offerings for that magical hour. As we sit on our illuminated patio awaiting our meal darkness has slid over the land and the mechanical city sounds reassertion themselves.
