A Glass of Hot Water

A sunset in Indonesia

Well, today I want to share with you the idea of "hot water". Whenever I go out to eat at a restaurant in Macau I usually ask for a glass water with my meal and here in Macau this usually means hot tea. Sometimes it is hot water. It is never cold water. When I ask for a glass of water what I really want is a cold glass of water. I am usually thirsty. I never get a cold glass of water. Instead I get a glass of hot water and for some reason I never remember this and I am always surprised when I go to pick the glass and it is hot. I always think to myself - Oh yeah, hot water. I don't totally understand the concept of hot water.

However, it has been explained to me that if it is hot outside and you are eating hot food then you should also have a hot drink. It is better for your body. Or as I alway seem to be told - It is good for you. (Just like when I ask why my students why they are eating chicken feet and they explain that it is good for you.) Maybe that makes sense, I don't know. I just know that I ask for a water and then I am confused when I get hot water. Maybe one of these days I will remember and it won't be a surprise. Maybe that is when I will know that I have become a local. I will just drink my hot water and stop complaining.
