People, People Everywhere

Thursday, 2 January 2014

I guess one of the advantages to traveling is all the people that you can meet. On this short holiday of mine I have been lucky to meet many interesting people. I am traveling alone on this holiday which makes it easier to meet new people. It is always easier to strike up a conversation with others probably because I am often just sitting by myself and staring into space. Or people watching. I guess I have spent a lot of time on this holiday just sitting and looking out at the people walking by the restaurant that I am sitting at. Anyhow, I met a man from Finland, a woman from South Africa these 2 guys from Sweden that seemed to be a bit lost. I think it might have been their first time traveling. They seemed to be busy planning their next destination without really enjoying where they currently were. Then I chatted with many local people and had some fun conversations with taxi drivers. I also met some lovely people from Australia and a cool couple that were on their honeymoon from South Africa.

It was fun to meet all these people and hear their stories. Everyone has their own way of looking at things and responding to things. Today when I was on this short ferry crossing from one island to another the sea was rough and it was raining out. People were getting splashed on the ferry. I looked out at some people their eyes were wide in terror. They seemed scared and worried if we would make it to the other island. However, as I scanned the faces on the boat I also saw people that were grinning or smirking. They were taking this unpleasant travel experience and taking it in stride. I realized that I should also probably do the same. I should stop looking so scared and try to laugh at the small things. We were all stuck together on this boat and we were all headed to the same little island. We could just grin and bear it.
