Rethinking Sponsorship

Monday, 4 November 2013

When I was in Laos I visited the Mekong English Centre and I found out that they offer sponsorships to students who may not be able to afford to attend English school. This student is an example of one of the many students looking for sponsorship at the English school. I was really interested to learn more about these student's stories. I found out that many of the students at the school were from the country side. Their families send them to the city to go and live with a relative and attend English school.

By learning English than there are many opportunities for the student to work in the tourism industry in Laos. The student could be come a tuk-tuk (taxi) driver or a tour guide. The students that are looking for sponsorship are keen students that want to learn more and make the commitment to come to school everyday to learn.

I found out that the school only charges about $20 USD for 20 classes per month. So for a commitment of about $50 USD you can sponsor a student for 3 months of English study at the school. I realized that for just a small amount of money I could make a big difference in someone's life.

Here is the link if you want to learn more about this. http://www.mec-laos.org/sponsor.htm
