The Long Drive Home

Sunday, 11 August 2013

I drove from Oliver, BC back to Saskatchewan. Along the way I had to drive over a few different mountain passes. I was traveling along HWY 3 towards Castlegar and I on the left side of the road there was a mother elk with a baby elk. They were just standing in the ditch and I was hoping that they wouldn’t decided to cross the road. They looked so peaceful standing there among the fireweed. Then only a couple of seconds later I saw this brown bear head pop up on the right side of the highway. This shaggy bear stuck his head up and looked at me as I drove by. I am not sure if he was eating berries on the side of the road or if he was following the elk. I didn’t have time to stop as there were cars behind me. I hope the baby elk was safe.

The other interesting thing that happened on my drive home as that my car over heated. I guess it didn’t like to climb up these mountain passes in the summer. Therefore I decided to travel through Nelson to take the Balfour Ferry instead of driving up the Creston/Salmo Pass. It was 9:30pm when I got on the ferry to cross Kooteny Lake. I was able to go up and stand out side on the top deck. It was a beautiful ferry crossing as the moon was almost full and I could see a ton of stars. The moon beams reflected on the lake and I felt so peaceful. I even saw a shooting star as the ferry glided across the lake.

I stopped to visit more friends as I drove home and this gave me the opportunity to visit, eat and drink yummy wine from Tinhorn Creek! It was fun to see friends and share stories. I wish I could have had more time to visit. It was a rushed trip.
