Just outside our dorm is the 24 hour Mini – Store or as highlighted in the photo a vending machine. It does have noodles, drinks and coffee so really what more could you ask for at a store. I had to laugh at the name because I feel that it is an example of lost in translation. Students sometimes ask me to go to the 24 hr store and they mean this vending machine.
It is very convenient and I am happy that they keep it stocked with my favourite ice coffee! I am also happy with the prices. They are actually reasonable. At the 7/11 this ice coffee is 9 MOP and at the grocery store the ice coffee is the cheapest at 4.5 MOP. I think the exchange rate is at 7 MOP = 1 CDN dollar.
The other cool think about this vending machine is that I can use my bus pass, called the Macau Card, and just tap the machine for my payment. I don’t have to have any coins. It is great and so easy. I can always add more money onto my bus pass at the 7/11 and I can use my Macau Card to pay at various 7/11 stores, coffee shops and vending machines. It is a very convenient system. I will probably be confused when I come home to Canada because I have gotten so use to just tapping my card for payment. I can already see myself at the Safeway tapping my card against the ATM and then wondering what the problem is.
